Sulfonation


Explanation

Introduce reaction of sulfo group (-SO3H) into the molecule of organic compound.
E.g.: C6H6+H2SO4→C6H5SO3H+H2O
The common sulfonating agents include concentrated sulfuric acids and sulfur trioxide, which are important reaction in making dyes or surfactants.

Technical Description

Aromatic compounds, under appropriate reaction conditions, cause the compounds to undergo sulfonation and have sulfo groups.
The acid can be sulfuric acid, sulfur trioxide, and chlorosulfonic acid for direct sulfonation. Alternatively, use salt containing sulfite ion to replace reaction for indirect sulfonation.
The compound after general sulfonation may contain or increase water solubility.

Solution

The core business of CHCIW lies on production of high quality sulfuric acid. We also operate with chlorosulfonic acid and sulfur trioxide of various concentrations. Test and optimization on sulfonation reaction of various conditions can be conducted in the laboratory, followed by trial run at experiment plant and then the trial mass production on site. The Company is also equipped with wastewater treatment pool to process waste acid generated from production.

■ Case 1
In view with rising awareness of environmental protection and reduction of possible solution residues, many contemporary dyes/ pigments or relevant materials have been changed to water base along with the trend, where reaction from sulfonation can produce water base characteristic.
The renowned Taiwanese companies of dye chemistry and North American companies of liquid crystal materials value our exceptional and rich experience in sulfonation, as well as stable and high-quality sources of sulfonic acid, where they cooperated with the Company to conduct minor sulfonation test on product at the experiment plant. The test result went well with excellent reproducibility, which is equivalent to the laboratory data.

To address rising demand in additives of synthetic polyester among international market, the company developed sulfonation and synthesis of the additives. The result went well with stable quality and steady increase in supply.
